Have you ever thought, I want to be financial free and not to have to worry about money? Silly question really, at some point in our lives we have all thought about it and maybe it’s a thought that you have regularly. However, thinking about it and achieving it are two very different things and I think that we would all agree that getting to that point of financial freedom is often challenging and a long and sometimes lonely road. But image what life would be like when you get there, more time to do the things you enjoy doing, more time with your family, more holidays, I could go on.

So what is the starting point to become financially free?

Your objective is not become financially free just to have money; your objective should be to become financially free so that life opens up choices for you. That’s a very different way of looking at money, but it will make a huge difference as to whether you achieve your goals or not. Focus not on the money but what freedom, money can give to your life. Having the right mind-set will give you the tools you will need to succeed in your goal, but let me tell you this. It’s not easy and it’s not a walk in the park. It will require dedication, commitment and sometimes you will have to do things that you don’t want to do. But perseverance is the key to successfully achieving financial freedom. You see perseverance and commitment over a sustained period of time with make you look like an overnight success. Think about it, how many people you know who are financially free and it looks like they achieved it overnight. Most likely they have been working very hard towards that goal for a long time. You just didn’t notice or they were quietly getting on with creating the life they wanted. They had the belief and perseverance to reach out for their goals.

On the 6th May 1954 a young Roger Bannister created athletic history when he ran 1 mile in 3 minutes 59.4 seconds. The record had previously stood for 9 years. Roger Bannister’s place in history was assured. But what happened next was just as incredible if not more so. For years man had been attempting to break the 4 minute mile and failed, but within a very short period of time other athletes had broken the 4 minute mile and today is the almost the norm and even talented high school athletes are now beating the 4 minute mile. So what was different? Before Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute mile, athletes did not believe that it was possible, but as soon as 4 minutes was broken, other athletes thought they could too. So mind set is so important, if you think you can, you can. If you think you can’t you won’t. The sub 2 hour marathon seems an impossibility and the current fastest time is 2:02:57, set by Dennis Kimetto. When the 2 hour time is finally broken, you can be sure that other athletes will quickly break the 2 hour barrier as well, because of all of a sudden the fastest men in the world will believe they can do it as well.

So planning to achieve financial freedom starts with mind-set and the belief that you can. If you believe you can achieve, you will do what is necessary to get there.
